When it comes to keeping your Poicephalus parrot safe, it’s important that your pet has a leg band. Leg bands functions as your bird’s identification card. It usually contains the information about the bird, when the bird has hatched, and other important information from the breeder of your pet like the state where your breeder is doing his business etc. It’s up to you if you want to remove your parrot’s leg band; some people don’t like to have leg band on their bird’s feet while some don’t mind. If ever your bird is fidgeting with its leg band, you can have your avian vet remove it for you.
If you want your Poicephalus parrot to be permanently identified, you can choose to have a microchip implanted on its skin. Micro – chipping in birds is pretty much the same procedure that is used in other household pets like dogs and cats. This is the process where vets surgically implant a chip under the animal’s skin. The chip contains the owner’s information or the bird species information so that they can be identified if ever they get lost.
Leg bands and micro – chipping are the legally recognized form of identification for parrots, and other household animals in general. It’s particularly helpful if you are always travelling with your pet or you like to take them outside the house since it will lessen the risk of them totally getting lost in case they flew away from you.
If you want to know how the identification will be implanted in your parrot, it’s best to consult your avian vet so that he/she can further explain to you the benefits of doing so as well as the process and also how much it would cost for the procedure.
