This tutorial will focus on creating a healthy meal for dogs who are diagnosed with congestive heart failure, or dogs with cardiovascular diseases. Keep in mind that you have to work closely with your vet or a K9 nutritionist or a K9 cardiac specialist in order to learn what kind of heart failure dog food you should provide for your dog. The heart failure dog food that we will provide here is something that could be beneficial on your dog’s heart health. This is of course, on top of the multiple medications that your dog needs to be in. The medications, routine checkups and a healthy diet can certainly prolong your dog’s life even after being diagnosed with a major illness such as this.

Caveat

You need to cater the diet to your dog’s individual need which is why this is sort of a caveat that the heart failure dog food recipe you will learn here may not necessarily benefit your dog. There are various factors that will play a part in the kind of diet that’s best for your dog. Your pet’s pre – existing health condition is part of it; so while your dog could be diagnosed with congestive heart failure or a certain type of cardiovascular disease; there could be other health issues going on for your dog that also needs to be addressed for his or her diet. This is why it could be tricky on what kind of diet you should feed your pet. Factors like your dog’s breed, age, weight etc. are going to play a part in it.

Starting Point

Keep these things in mind before you try to create this recipe and feed it to your dog. This recipe is just sort of a basic starting point about the kind of ingredients you may need to be feeding your dog with. Make sure that if you want to try this out for your pet; you have already consulted with your vet or K9 nutritionist just to make certain that it will all be suitable for your dog’s health condition. Perhaps they will make some tweak in the recipe or switch out some ingredients or even add some supplements that your dog might need. The key is to keep a low sodium diet while also giving vitamins and minerals that your pet will need while trying to limit fat and sodium as these things can affect your dog’s heart condition.

What You Need

  • 2 pots with ½ cup of water
  • Pan
  • Food Processor
  • Large bowl

Ingredients:

  • ½ pound of chicken gizzards
  • 3 eggs
  • 2 pounds of Lean hamburger or ground beef
  • 2 pounds of lean ground turkey
  • 1 Sweet Potato
  • 1 apple
  • Six ounces of green peas
  • 6 ounces of broccoli
  • 6 ounces of cauliflower
  • 3 tablespoons of coconut oil
  • 1 cup of cooked white rice
  • 14 ounces of canned tuna
  • ½ cup of cottage cheese

How to Cook

Step #1:

Place the ½ of chicken gizzards in one of the pots with ½ cup of water. You will need to boil the chicken gizzards for 10 minutes. They will be cook through but it won’t be super cooked. In the other pot, boil 3 eggs for 10 minutes to make it hard – boiled.

Step #2:

Place the 2 pounds of lean hamburger/ ground beef and 2 pounds of lean turkey meat together in one pan, or if your pan is not that big, then you can separate them. Cook the meat until it is brown.

Step #3:

While your meats are brown and the chicken gizzards as well as the eggs are still boiling, you can go ahead and prepare the veggies.

Step #4:

Use your food processor this time, the first thing you need to add are chicken gizzards (once it’s already boiled, you can let it cool for a bit). The next thing you need to add is sliced sweet potatoes, then add in your three hard – boiled eggs, and some sliced apples.

Step #5:

Add 6 ounces of green peas, 6 ounces of broccoli, and also the 6 ounces of cauliflower. You can use frozen or fresh just make sure to add 6 ounces of each into the food processor. Process all of these ingredients until it’s fairly smooth.

Step #7:

The next step is to get your bowl and mix two ingredients: the coconut oil and the cooked white rice. Make sure to add three tablespoons of coconut oil. As a side note, coconut oil is a super food for most dogs because it’s a beneficial type of oil ingredient that can improve your dog’s digestive system, coat, and improve brain function as well as your dog’s cardiovascular system.

Step #8:

The next thing to add to the mixing bowl after the coconut oil is the cup of cooked white rice. Make sure to mix it in with the coconut oil while it is still warm so that it will melt the coconut oil. If you’ve already cooked the rice, and let it cool for a bit, what you can do is to melt your coconut oil in the microwave for a few seconds before adding it to the mixture.

Step #9:

After that, you need to add your ground beef and ground turkey to the mixing bowl. Make sure that you’ve drained and rinse the meat to ensure that the fats are removed as much as possible even if they are both lean meats. Mix it all thoroughly.

Step #10:

You need to add 14 ounces of canned tuna and just add it into the mix. Then add ½ cup of cottage cheese as well as the mixture from your food processor. Make sure to mix it’s all thoroughly mixed before serving it to your pet.

Even if your pet doesn’t have cardiovascular disease or congestive heart failure, you can still feed this recipe to your dog. You can feed ½ cup of this meal for every 20 to 25 pounds of body weight. But as mentioned earlier, it’s essential to discuss this with your vet before feeding this kind of diet to your dog.
