This kidney disease dog food may not be applicable for your pet so make sure that before you follow our cooking steps below, you first inquire with your vet if the ingredients used here are suitable for your pet dog. Kidney disease like other major health issues is degenerate or progressive. This means that it’s chronic and it doesn’t really have a cure which is why it all comes down to your dog’s diet. Just like in humans, if your pet has a renal issue, having a kidney disease dog food diet will surely create a great impact on your pet’s overall health.

Important Note

Before we proceed, it’s important to note the functions of the kidney so that you’ll have an idea on what kind of foods will help your dog on making their condition better. Similar to humans and most mammal species, the main function of the kidneys is to filter out the waste in the bloodstream, and also process urine. Kidneys are very important because they basically keep the bad things out of the body once the digestive system broke down every food. If kidneys fail, that means the filter system in your dog’s body is not functioning well. This only means that the wastes that are supposed to be excreted out of the body are kept inside which can cause various issues with other organs and the overall functioning of the body.

Kidney Functions

The goal of providing a healthy diet for your dog is that if their kidneys are not functioning at a 100%, you would want to help them out as much as they can. As an owner, it’s your job to keep them healthy by limiting the foods that could make your dog’s condition worse. You would want to feed them the kinds of food that won’t be too much to handle for their kidneys and feed them meals or food ingredients that will also keep them healthy.

Low Phosphorous Diet

You need to provide ingredients that contain a low phosphorous diet. Depending on the stage of the kidney disease of your dog; usually, the more progressive the disease is, the lower protein your pet should consume because meat are hard to filter by the kidneys.

Protein or No Protein?

In line with this, some owners think that if their pet has a kidney disease that they shouldn’t be fed with no protein, but that’s not true. You should still feed them with just a balance amount and don’t totally remove it from your pet’s diet. It’s also important to provide your pet with high quality protein meat. The logic behind this is that, the higher the quality of the protein, the better. This is because when your pet’s body breakdown the protein, it leaves behind nitrogen. So the higher the quality of the protein, the less nitrogen it would leave behind. High quality proteins include raw meat, egg whites and the likes.

Depends on the Diagnosis

Just like any diet or disease, it’s very important to note that every dog is different and every diagnosis is also different. Your dog’s specific nutritional needs and stages of the diseases will certainly vary, so make sure to talk to your vet or work with your K9 nutritionists as to the suitable diet of your pet.

The kidney disease dog food recipe that we will share with you here is just one example of the kind of diet you can give to your pet. Talking to your vet is important because they might also refer you to a K9 nutritionist.

Ingredients:

  •  Large empty mixing bowl
  • Blender
  • 2 cups of cooked rice
  • ¾ of a cup of dried parsley or ½ cup of fresh parsley
  • 2 cups of pureed pumpkin (organic/ all natural)
  • One pint of egg whites (12 -15 eggs)
  • 1 large apple
  • One large sweet potato
  • 1 pound of green beans
  • 2 pounds of cooked lean hamburger

How to Cook

Step #1:

Get your large empty mixing bowl and pour in your 2 cups of cooked rice in it. Add ¾ of a cup of parsley or your ½ cup of fresh parsley. Fresh parsley is actually better.

Step #2:

Mix it all in before adding 2 cups of pureed pumpkin. You can make your own or you can just buy the canned product but just make sure that you buy puree pumpkin or an all – natural pumpkin. You don’t want to buy the pumpkin pie mix because it usually contains lots of sugars and various artificial ingredients that are going to be really bad for your dog especially if he/ she have kidney disease. Make sure to just purchase the puree pumpkin. Mix it all in.

Step #3:

The next step is to add the 1 pint of egg whites. You’ll need around 12 to 15 eggs in order to have a pint. It will depend on how big of an egg you will be able to buy. So cooked it up and get the egg whites and add it in the mix.

Step #4:

The next thing you need to do is to make a veggie puree using the blender. You need to use the apple and cut it cubes. You also need to mix in one large sweet potato. Make sure to boil it before putting it in the blender. The next thing to add is your one pound of green beans; make sure to wash and also cook it before placing it in the blender.

Step #5:

Once you get all of that it, you can then pour in a cup of water and use the blender to puree all these ingredients. You can also use a food processor.

Step #6:

The next step is to add 2 pounds of cooked lean hamburger (about 90% lean). You might want to get as lean of meat as possible. You can add about 2/3 of lean hamburger, though it doesn’t have to be exact. Add it in the puree veggies and blend it or use your food processor. You also need to leave at least 1/3 of the hamburger out and mix it in your first bowl without the puree.

Step #7:

Make sure to not drain the hamburger and keep the fat meat in it before adding it in the first bowl without puree. After mixing in the hamburger in the first veggie bowl, you can now add the puree you made and mix it all in.

Step #8:

Make sure to cool the ingredients after you heat or cook it up before mixing it all in the bowl or the blender. Once it’s all mixed in and cool, you can serve it to your dog. This particular meal can last for about 5 to 7 days. You can put in the fridge, or you can place it in an air – tight container. You can also put it in the air tight container and put it on your freezer. You can freeze it for 7 to 8 weeks. This is ideal if you want to make a huge batch so that it won’t take up much of your time, and you can pop it in the microwave to warm it up a bit before serving to your dog.

Stick to Natural Diet

This kind of meal is something that your vet will recommend since your pet has been diagnosed with kidney disease. It’s really not recommended that you only feed your dog with commercial food because it’s not healthy especially for your pet’s kidneys since most of the commercial foods contain artificial ingredients which are hard for your dog’s kidneys to filter or process. Most likely, your vet will recommend an all – natural diet with whole foods. Homemade kidney disease dog foods like this may be quite time – consuming but it’s definitely worth it as it will help in keeping your dog healthy and live a longer life. We hope this article help you create your own kidney disease dog food.
